A Los Angeles man who spent 11 years in prison for a series of armed robberies he didn’t commit has been exonerated and claims he doesn’t hold any “grudges”
Ruben Martinez Jr. was declared factually innocent of the crimes at a court hearing Tuesday and received an apology from Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey.
Martinez, 49, already had served nearly a quarter of the 47-year prison sentence handed down after his wrongful conviction in 2008.
“My darkest hour (was) when I was found guilty,” he said at a press conference after the hearing.
“I did not do this time by myself. My family did time. My wife did time with me, did the 11 years with me. I couldn't do it on my own, by my own strength. It was God’s strength that got me through this,” he said.
