An assistant professor at the University of Louisiana Monroe was killed over the weekend following an argument with his father-in-law, who then turned the firearm on himself, according to authorities.

Officers with the Mer Rouge Police Department and the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office responded on Sunday to a home in Handy Hill, where they found Professor Joshua Comer suffering from a gunshot wound. Chief of Police Melvin Holmes confirmed to KNOE on Tuesday that the educator died from his injuries later the same night.

A quick search of the home also turned up the suspect, Jack Matthews, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said it appeared that Comer and his 68-year-old father-in-law argued ahead of their deadly confrontation.

University of Louisiana Monroe President Ronald Berry on Monday extended his sympathies to Comer’s loved ones as well as all of the students he has had an impact on.

“The ULM family is shocked and saddened by the loss of Dr. Joshua Comer. Christine and I offer our heartfelt and deepest sympathies to his family and his many students and colleagues,” Berry said in a statement.
