Riley Howell, the 21-year-old student at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte who died who trying to stop the gunman who opened fire on campus last week, will be buried Sunday with military honors.
Howell, a Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet, charged at the gunman, identified by police as Trystan Andrew Terrell, and "took the assailant off his feet,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Kerr Putney said last week.
“Seeing exactly what was going on, (Howell) did exactly what we train people to do," Putney said. "You’re either going to run, hide and shield or you’re going to take the fight to the assailant. Having no place to run and hide, he did the last.”
Howell was killed in the April 30 shooting, along with 19-year-old Ellis Parlier. Drew Pescaro, 19, Sean Dehart, 20, Emily Houpt, 23, and Rami Alramadhan, 20, were all injured in the attack.
Lt. Col. Chunka Smith, who runs the university’s ROTC program, told CBS News that the Army and National Guard “will ensure that Riley Howell is properly recognized for his heroism.”
