The Trump administration is considering enacting a policy that would allow cities and states to determine whether or not they want to accept refugees, according a new report.
NBC News reported on Wednesday that they have obtained a draft of an executive order that would “allow state and local jurisdictions to deny entry to refugees who have been approved for resettlement in the United States.”
The report said that the order would make “the federal government will resettle refugees only where both the relevant state and local governments have consented to participate” in the resettlement program.
A senior DHS official reportedly told the outlet that the order is currently under review by lawyers from various government agencies.
“If a state or local jurisdiction does not agree to take in refugees, the federal government will have to find another location, according to the draft. An exception to this rule would be made in the case of resettling spouses or children of refugees already settled,” NBC reports.
The draft says that the federal government “will resettle refugees only where both the relevant state and local governments have consented,” giving rights back to the states.
