Angry seniors today raise hell against a mayor who a year ago made them a promise to build $500 million in new affordable senior housing, then turned his back and flew to Iowa to sell his brand of progressivism on the national market.

We echo the frustration of the men and women of East Brooklyn Congregations and Metro Industrial Areas Foundation as today, at the end of their ropes, they call for Mayor de Blasio to “step up or step down."

In last year’s budget negotiations, de Blasio agreed to invest a half-billion dollars to start building thousands of units of senior housing on city-owned land. This would enable an elegant trade for elderly NYCHA residents, who number nearly 80,000.

Move into new smaller apartments built for their needs, and out of the oversized NYCHA units where they raised families — freeing up those bigger units up for some of the families on waitlists for public housing.

Then de Blasio reneged. Actually, he said, he never promised that cash. Actually, he said, he only really meant to put down about $100 million in city funds for senior housing. Actually, he’s got his own plans underway.
