A Texas woman was sentenced to two years in prison Friday for committing adoption fraud, the Justice Department announced in a press release.

Swenson ran a licensed adoption agency in Houston for several years, according to the feds. At the agency, she would often promise two couples that they could adopt the same child, a process known as double-matching.

After both sets of prospective parents paid her, Swenson would then lie about why one of the couples could not adopt the child, concocting stories such as birth mothers backing out or saying the adoptive family had not paid enough.

The feds identified 20 victims of Swenson’s scheme and said she charged $20,000 to $30,000 per “match.” That means she schemed couples out of between $400,000 and $600,000.

“Simone Swenson took advantage of hopeful adoptive parents who have already been through a difficult journey,” FBI agent Perrye Turner said in the release. “She used these couples as her personal piggy bank and took advantage of them financially and emotionally. This was a seven year-long investigation for FBI Houston that focused...on an individual whose greed and deceit forever scarred individuals who simply wanted to form a family.”
