Social media firms must hand over data on how children use the internet to help vital research, scientists say.

Tech giants have also been urged to help fund studies that examine the consequences of social media use. 

Research looking at links between internet use and mental health is held back by a lack of accurate data showing which websites children use and how long they spend online.

But if the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat handed over anonymised data of how children use their apps, it would enable much more accurate and useful scientific research.
