As a child, animals were my refuge from the complexities of life. The group I was most drawn to was the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

My reverence turned outrage when I read former PETA worker Heather Harper-Troje’s chilling disclosure back in 2015 that PETA’s fervent belief is animals are better humanely euthanized than kept as pets.

Now supposed animal-rights groups that seemingly align with PETA’s stance that shelter animals do not deserve a fair chance of being adopted are betraying dogs and cats in our shelter system by fighting against their single best chance of survival, the Companion Animal Protection Act.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the New York City-based Voters for Animal Rights are behind closed doors pushing death for those they claim to protect.

The bill in question, known as CAPA, is a set of humane guidelines shelters must follow. Under its mandates, animals must live in sanitary conditions and receive veterinary care. Animals not deemed suffering or vicious would not be able to be killed when a shelter had space. Or if the shelter in question was full, they would be transferred to a less crowded facility.
