Ever since New York overtook Philly as the nation’s biggest city after the Declaration of Independence, things both good and bad frequently happen here first, then reverberate across the country.

So it will be with coronavirus and the response to the highly contagious disease. It’s not America First, it’s New York First. The country can and must learn from what we have been battling.

Because coronavirus landed here hardest first, New York has, by necessity, become expert in coronavirus from the eruption of the first cluster in New Rochelle. Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio have put aside their usual sniping to join together, de Blasio on the street and hospital level, Cuomo fighting the feds for more help, setting restrictive social distancing rules, gathering supplies and exponentially boosting testing.

Daily they recite the roll of tests, confirmed positives, hospitalizations, ICU cases and deaths, and make the machinery of government move in reaction to the data.

America must follow. Restrictions on gatherings and movement that grind down the economy will come to other states, along with ramped-up testing. The cure is unpleasant; the disease and the fear it spreads are worse.
