The Basic Instinct actress, who suffered a massive stroke in 2001, is now an advocate for brain-aging diseases that disproportionally affect women. In a new interview with Variety, she said she believes her disease caused fans to forget her — just like they forgot Princess Diana.

“I was like the hottest movie star, you know?” she said. “It was like Miss Princess Diana and I were so famous — and she died, and I had a stroke. And we were forgotten.”

After her brain aneurism, Stone, 61, suffered a string of professional and person issues: fighting for custody of her son Roan Joseph Bronstein, remortgaging her house, and losing out on movie roles due to her condition.

The star — who at the time was at the end of her marriage to journalist Phil Bronstein — said “just functioning” was difficult.
