A Washington, D.C., police officer who responded to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot committed suicide in the days after the siege, the acting chief of Metropalitan Police Department told members of Congress.

Officer Jeffrey Smith is one of two cops to commit suicide in the aftermath of the riot. Capitol Police officer Howard Liebengood also died by suicide soon after the insurrection.

Officer Brian Sicknick, also of the Capitol Police, was beaten to death by rioters as they tried to break into the building in attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Acting Chief Robert J. Contee III announced Smith had died while addressing a closed session of the House Appropriations Committee.

“We honor the service and sacrifices of Officers Brian Sicknick, Howard Liebengood, and Jeffery Smith, and offer condolences to all the grieving families.” he said.
