A police officer responding to a domestic violence threat was gunned down through the front door of a Utah home after just more than a year on the job.

A probation officer was also injured in the deadly shooting, which unfolded at a residence in Ogden around 2:15 p.m. on Thursday. They were responding to a 911 call from a woman who lived there, claiming that her husband was threatening to kill her, according to ABC News4.

“Our hearts are broken. We lost one of our own," Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt told reporters, adding the officer only just started with department 15 months ago.

Watt also confirmed the shooter was found dead inside the house, but did not provide additional details.

When authorities arrived on the scene, the suspect refused to cooperate and “suddenly retreated” inside the home, slamming the door behind him. From there, Watt said, the man unleashed several rounds, striking the officers through the door —which prompted police to return fire.
