A Rikers Island inmate faces attempted murder charges for slashing a correction officer in the neck, police said.
Inmate Gerren Devlin allegedly left Correction Officer Gaurav Kumar with several gashes across his neck and along his left middle finger and thumb, photos and documents obtained by the Daily News reveal.
Devlin, 34, slipped out of his cell at the Anna M. Kross Center and struck Kumar in the left side of his face around 11 p.m. Thursday, sources said. The officer rushed to a local hospital.
“While public attention continues to focus on so-called low level offenders leaving our jails, the nature of this attack demonstrates the violent caliber of most of the inmates who remain in our custody,” said Correction Officer Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen. “It’s sad that our elected leaders continue to hide behind the notion of closing Rikers, years from now, instead of engaging with us to implement our ideas to make the jails safer immediately.”
Devlin was arrested on a warrant on Dec. 4. He was also involved in a massive gun-dealing ring, sources said.
