A leak of sensitive British government papers appears to have been linked to a Russian disinformation campaign, Reddit said Friday, spurring concerns that Moscow might be attempting to influence the upcoming UK general election.
The news aggregation board said in an statement that it had banned 61 accounts following an investigation into the post, which exposed a 451-page report on the relationship between the U.S. and the UK The opposition Labour Party has sought to tie the governing Conservatives with President Trump ahead of Thursday’s vote.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn spotlighted the papers in November, more than a month after they surfaced on Reddit, claiming they proved that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is putting the country’s health system up “for sale.”
Johnson kept Trump at arm’s length when the president visited London for the NATO summit this week, and the commander-in-chief is politically toxic across the Atlantic.
When Britons head to the voting booth, they’ll have the opportunity to bolster Johnson’s bid to take the UK out of the European Union before the current Jan. 31 deadline — or to unseat the Conservatives and replace them with a government that could delay or even seek to cancel Brexit.
