Republican Sen. Rand Paul said there is “no justification” for the attack outside his Kentucky home that left him with six broken ribs and a damaged lung.
“From my perspective, I’m not really too concerned about what someone’s motive is. I’m just concerned that I was attacked from the back and somebody broke six of my ribs and gave me a damaged lung where at least for now I have trouble speaking and breathing and now I’ve hurt for 10 days,” Paul told the Washington Examiner in his first interview since the Nov. 3 assault.
“There is no motive that would justify hitting somebody from behind and breaking their ribs and damaging their lungs, so no, there is no justification for something like that,” the 54-year-old told the newspaper on Monday.
Paul, who returned to the Senate on Monday, was doing yard work outside his Bowling Green home when his neighbor Rene Boucher allegedly tackled him from behind, breaking his ribs and causing fluid to build up in his chest.
Police have not released a motive for the attack, but Boucher’s lawyer has said politics did not play a part.
