POLL: Trump Support Among GOP Goes UP After President Blasts America-Hating ‘Squad’

Maybe he really is a “stable genius.”

Over the weekend, as the Democrats were in freefall — calling each other racist and battling to get illegal aliens free health care — President Trump suddenly blasted four “progressive” members of Congress, Reps. Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan or Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts.

While the mainstream media and liberals called Trump’s posts on Twitter racist, Republicans and conservatives apparently approved of Trump’s message: If you hate America so much, why don’t you go somewhere else?

According to a new Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll, support for Trump rose.

“The national survey, conducted on Monday and Tuesday after Trump told the lawmakers they should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came,” showed his net approval among members of his Republican Party rose by 5 percentage points to 72%, compared with a similar poll that ran last week,” Reuters reported.

This time, while Democrats and some independents may see clear signs of racial intolerance woven throughout Trump’s tweets, Republicans are hearing a different message, said Vincent Hutchings, a political science and African-American studies professor at the University of Michigan.

“To Republicans, Trump is simply saying: ‘Hey, if you don’t like America, you can leave,” Hutchings said. “That is not at all controversial. If you already support Trump, then it’s very easy to interpret his comments that way.”

By criticizing liberal members of the House, Trump is “doing exactly what Republicans want him to do,” Hutchings said. “He’s taking on groups that they oppose.”

In his weekend posts on Twitter, Trump wrote: “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.”

Later, he wrote, “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”

But Trump had a plan, which he clearly defined in a later tweet, just as House Democrats banded together to call for a vote to condemn the president’s remarks.

“The Dems were trying to distance themselves from the four progressives, but now they are forced to embrace them,” he wrote on Twitter. ‘That means they are endorsing Socialism, hate of Israel and the USA! Not good for the Democrats!”

Charlie Sykes, a conservative writer critical of Trump, told MSNBC that the president is “framing the election as a clash of civilizations.”

Of the four lawmakers who are now calling themselves “The Squad,” Sykes said Trump is saying, “They’re coming for you. They hate you. They despise America. They are not you.”

“And if you look at the Electoral College map,” Sykes added, “the places that will play are the places Donald Trump will need to win the election.”
