Five people were killed and six others hurt when a heating pipe burst in a small Russian hotel Monday, local authorities said.
All of the victims — including a child — were staying in the nine-room Mini Hotel Caramel in the basement of a residential building in the central city of Perm, near the Ural mountains, when the plumbing explosion occurred, according to officials.
A doctor treating the victims, Andrei Babikov, told Reuters one 33-year-old woman had burns covering 35 percent of her body and two men, 28 and 25, were less seriously hurt.
The explosion also left 20 buildings — including a hospital, a school and a kindergarten — without heat in the dead of winter, local authorities said.
A Perm emergency services source told the RIA news agency that the pipe has been in operation since 1962 and it wasn’t the first time it broke.
