Pfizer and BioNTech announced on Thursday that are donating vaccine doses to vaccinate athletes for this summer's Tokyo Olympics.

In a statement, they said they would "donate doses of the companies' COVID-19 Vaccine to help vaccinate athletes, and their delegations" who are taking part in the Olympics and Paralympics games.

The president of the International Olympic Committee said in a statement: "This donation of the vaccine is another tool in our toolbox of measures to help make the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 safe and secure for all participants and to show solidarity with our gracious Japanese hosts."

Japan is facing questions over how it can safely host the games, given the country is facing a surge in virus infections.

International spectators will not be allowed at the games, and a decision on whether domestic spectators can attend has not yet been made.
