Pete Buttigieg was clinging to a tiny lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders in the troubled Iowa caucuses after the rumpled lefty racked up a big margin in the latest batch of results released after midnight Friday morning.
Sanders trailed Buttigieg by just 3 state delegate equivalents out of more than 2,000 up for grabs with 97% of the precincts counted.
The Vermont senator mounted the unexpected comeback by dramatically outperforming expectations in so-called satellite caucuses set up for those with valid reasons for not participating in the main gatherings.
Some projections now say Sanders is more likely to wind up on top given where the remaining precincts are located. But most analysts are throwing up their hands in frustration at the impossible to handicap count.
Democratic Party officials were scrambling to verify the remaining results three days after Iowans gathered at caucus sites across the state to begin choosing which Democrat will take on President Trump in November.
