During the height of the Mueller probe, President Trump yearned for someone as noxious and ruthless as the notorious lawyer and hatchet man to Joe McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover who later became his mentor. “Where’s my Roy Cohn?” he asked.

Barr’s initial four-page summary of the Mueller report exonerated Trump of obstruction, even though Mueller explicitly didn’t. Later, Barr declared executive privilege over redacted portions of the report.

This week, Trump authorized Barr to broadly declassify documents related to the “origins" of the FBI probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Despite legitimate FISA warrants to pursue Russian contacts with the Trump campaign, Trump sees “an attempted coup or an attempted takedown of the president of the United States” (forget that it began well before the election).

Trump now says those who played a role in investigating him — he happily ticks off names on his enemies list — are guilty of “treason," a crime punishable by death.

Take it all together: The president seeks to expose any otherwise classified information that might compromise and incriminate his enemies, while bottling up facts that might reflect poorly on him and his allies.
