Ohio State defensive end Chase Young, a serious contender to win the Heisman and be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, won’t play this weekend against Maryland while the NCAA and Ohio State investigate him for a “possible” rules violation.
“I made a mistake last year by accepting a loan from a family friend,” Young tweeted Friday morning. “I repaid it in full last summer and I’m working with the University and NCAA to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
Ohio State only said that Young was being held out because of a “possible NCAA issue from last year.” The statement then added the athletic department is “looking into” the supposed violation.
Young shredded Wisconsin with four sacks in his last game, and already has 13.5 sacks in Ohio State’s eight games. The 8-0 Buckeyes are currently No. 1 in the playoff rankings.
Only one defensive player — Michigan corner Charles Woodson in 1997 — has won the Heisman. But Young has been dominant enough to sneak into the conversation.
