A town in North Carolina canceled its annual Christmas parade after protesters threatened to converge on the march because a Confederate history group were scheduled to appear, officials said.

The mayor of Wake Forest defended the decision in a video statement released Wednesday, saying the parade was canceled to protect citizens after “outside agitators” threatened to protest.

“This year’s event has the potential to be marked not by marching bands and Santa Claus, but instead by protests by clashing groups from outside Wake Forest, with innocent bystanders caught in the middle,” Vivian Jones said in the video, at one point tearing up because the parade was canceled.

“The decision to cancel this year’s parade is not a reflection on our community or our wonderful people,” she added.

“It’s an unfortunate consequence of what happens when outside agitators make it known they will use local events like our parade to sow hate and spark chaos,” she said.
