The New York Senate Majority Leader was elected Wednesday as chairwoman of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the official democratic organization dedicated to electing state legislators.

Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) became the first woman to helm the state’s upper chamber in January after Democrats wrestled control of the state away from Republicans by ousting the majority of a splinter group of Democratic senators who allied with the GOP.

“Leader Stewart-Cousins has proven to be a trailblazing leader as the first woman to lead a legislative conference in New York and a fierce campaigner by flipping the New York Senate," said DLCC President Jessica Post. " As the new Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Chair, Stewart-Cousins will help us blaze a new blue trail across the country as Democrats fight to flip state chambers blue."

Dems controlled 40 of the 63 seats in the Senate chamber this past session, giving the party full power over the legislative branch for the first time in decades.

Stewart-Cousins, partnering with Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx), oversaw a Democratic-led legislature that flexed its progressive muscles earlier this year by passing a slate of laws that strengthened sexual harassment laws, reformed rent regulations in tenants favor and addressed climate change and criminal justice reform.
