The state’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentence for spree killer Nikko Jenkins, who brutally murdered four people in August 2013.

The court rejected defense arguments that Jenkins’ trial proceedings were irregular and that the 32-year-old convict is too mentally ill to be executed, reported the Omaha World-Herald on Friday.

“We cannot say that the district court abused its discretion in finding Jenkins to be competent to waive counsel, to enter no contest pleas, to proceed to sentencing, and to be sentenced to death,” wrote the high court in a 53-page ruling. “We reject Jenkins’ constitutional challenges to the death penalty and affirm his convictions and sentences.”

Jenkins’ attorney, Douglas County Public Defender Tom Riley, recently filed to have his client taken off death row because officials have declared him incompetent and in need of forced medications.
