A mother was in critical condition Wednesday morning after her 8-year-old son accidentally shot her during a University of Memphis baseball game at USA Stadium.

The child discovered the gun inside an antique WWII vehicle on display at the Milington stadium, set up in conjunction with Veterans Appreciation day Tuesday night during the annual W.S. “Babe” Howard Classic.

“The Juvenile believed it was a toy gun,” Milington Police Chief Dunbar told WREG. “He picked the gun up, pulled the trigger and accidentally shot his mother. It was an accident pure and simple.”

The stadium was evacuated amid the incident and the University of Memphis game against UT-Martin was cancelled.

Authorities said the gun involved was registered to 76-year-old Charles McFarland, who was charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. The Atoka resident is being held without bond.
