The secretary of state refused Monday to defend his department’s career officials against fact-challenged attacks from President Trump and his GOP cronies, effectively confirming laments from former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.
Speaking at a State Department press conference, Pompeo repeatedly dodged questions about the president’s baseless claim that Yovanovitch, William Taylor, George Kent and other U.S. diplomats are “Never Trumpers" because they’ve testified in the impeachment inquiry.
“I’ll defer to the White House about particular statements and the like,” Pompeo said. “I don’t have anything else to say about the Democrats’ impeachment proceedings.”
Pressed on why he won’t stand up for his diplomats, Pompeo said, “I always defend State Department employees; greatest diplomatic corps in the history of the world. Very proud of the team.”
During her public testimony in the impeachment inquiry Friday, Yovanovitch took not-so-subtle jabs at Pompeo for looking the other way as Trump, Rudy Giuliani and sketchy Ukrainians undertook a smear campaign against her that resulted in the president abruptly recalling her from Kiev in May.
