Posted By TheNewsCommenter: From Nydailynews.com: “Miami couple who dropped over $100,000 on banana wall art expect it ‘will become an iconic historical object’”. Below is an excerpt from the article.
The Miami couple who spent over $100,000 on the now-viral art installation of a banana that was duct-taped to a wall are fully aware their purchase was ... bizarre, to say the least, according to AP News.
“We are acutely aware of the blatant absurdity of the fact that ‘Comedian’ is an otherwise inexpensive and perishable piece of produce and a couple inches of duct tape," Billy and Beatrice Cox said in a statement, referring to Maurizio Cattelan’s piece as the “unicorn of the art world” due to “the public debate it sparked about art and our society.”
“Yes ... the banana itself will need to be replaced,” the pair confirmed, adding that Andy Warhol’s landmark “Campbell’s Soup Cans” piece was similarly “met with mockery" early on.
According to the Perrotin gallery, the Italian artist has sold three editions of “Comedian," with each sale ranging between $120,000 and $150,000.
And though one could simply do their own version by purchasing a piece of fruit and taping it to a wall, the gallery said certificates of authenticity are imperative for conceptual art and without that, the piece would be “nothing more than its material representation.”
