At least one person was killed and several others injured in a shooting at a South Bend, Indiana bar early Sunday, hours before Mayor Pete Buttigieg took part in a nearby town hall on the recent police shooting of a black man in his town.
Police said 27-year-old Brandon Williams was killed and as many as 10 people were injured in the 2 a.m. shooting outside Kelly’s Pub on Mishawaka Avenue.
The local watering hole is about five miles from Washington High School where, on Sunday afternoon, the 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful took questions at a town hall with South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski.
Last week, Buttigieg changed his campaign schedule to return to South Bend, cancelling an appearance at a New York City gala, to address the June 16 shooting of 54-year-old Eric Jack Logan.
Authorities said the police officer involved in the shooting, who has since been placed on paid administrative leave, was responding to reports of a suspicious person going through cars around 3:30 a.m. when he spotted Logan inside a vehicle, CBS reported.
