A man was shot and killed in Louisville early Monday morning as the Kentucky National Guard and the city’s police department were working “to disperse a crowd," Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement.

Authorities were trying to enforce a curfew that went into effect at 9 p.m. Sunday when they were “fired upon” shortly after midnight, according to the governor and the Louisville police chief.

His name and age were not immediately known and it was also not clear if he was the one who fired at the police and members of the National Guard.

“Given the seriousness of the situation, I have authorized the Kentucky State Police to independently investigate the event,” Beshear said.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been in place in the city since Friday night, an attempt to keep protests peaceful and prevent looting and fires, which tend to take place after dark.
