Police said one man is behind bars this week and another killed himself near the crime scene after the bizarre murder of a University of Georgia professor over the weekend.
Marianne Shockley, 42, was found naked and unresponsive early Sunday morning near a hot tub at the home of Clark Heindel in Milledgeville, Ga. He and Shockley’s apparent boyfriend, Marcus Lillard, were trying to revive her under pouring rain when police arrived, Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee said in a news conference Monday.
They told police she had drowned in the hot tub, but the sheriff said officers immediately noticed something was wrong because the two men were naked and acting suspiciously.
“This is one of the strangest cases that we’ve ever worked," he told reporters. "I don’t know how to explain this to people that are not in our business, but when we first arrived at the crime scene there was something about it that was not right, and it was just sort of a bizarre, different kind of case.”
The woman, an entomologist at UGA, was pronounced dead at the scene and the two men were separated so officers could question them about the incident, Massee said. Lillard was interviewed in a police cruiser while Heinder was asked to go indoors, the sheriff said.
