Posted By TheNewsCommenter: From Nydailynews.com: “Magnitude 5.0 aftershock rocks California after big July quakes”. Below is an excerpt from the article.

The 5.0 magnitude temblor struck at 1:49 p.m. local time and was centered in Little Lake east of Bakersfield, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

People reported shaking as far south as Santa Clarita and Simi Valley, officials said, with some saying they felt movement in the Los Angeles basin.

“It’s an aftershock from the series that included the 6.4 and 7.1 quakes on July 4 and 5. It’s a larger one in the series, but it’s not surprising,” John Bellini, a geophysicist at the USGS told the Daily News.

He said two aftershocks measuring 5.0 or higher were felt immediately after the 6.4 quake on July 4 quake and four aftershocks of 5.0 or higher followed after the 7.1 quake a day later, including the one Thursday.

“The aftershocks have been decreasing in number and size overall, and that’s still expected to continue,” he said.
