Ace Davis, a 10-year-old student at Lexington’s Millcreek Elementary School, won his science fair by “proving” the New England Patriots quarterback doesn’t play fair.
With the help of his family, Ace, quarterback of his team, inflated footballs at different levels of pressure per square inch and discovered that throwing accuracy was consistent with lower pressure.
His three-panel presentation, replete with plenty of photos and a less-than-scientific graph, is titled, simply enough, “Is Tom Brady a Cheater?”
In New England’s dominating 45-7 AFC Championship victory over the Indianapolis Colts in 2015, Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson believed a football he had just intercepted was underinflated and brought it to the attention of the Colts, who then discussed the topic with the NFL. The scandal, known as “Deflategate,” led to a four-game Brady suspension, $1 million Patriots fine and the loss of their 2016 first-round draft pick.
If you think some anti-Brady bias might have crept into the study, your instincts would be spot-on. When Ace was asked by NFL Draft Diamonds why the Patriots superstar was the focus of his research, he responded, “Because I hate Tom Brady. He’s been accused of cheating before, I want him to be caught.”
