The Jets are expected to re-shuffle their offensive line again for their Monday night showdown against the Patriots.
Gang Green has been preparing rookie Chuma Edoga to play left tackle with Kelvin Beachum (ankle) unlikely to go, according to sources. Brandon Shell, who replaced Beachum on the left side in the second half last week, is expected to return to right tackle against New England. Edoga had supplanted Shell as the starting right tackle the past two games.
The changes make sense given Edoga’s previous experience on the left side in college. He started two games at left tackle for USC as a sophomore.
Shell, meanwhile, only started getting left tackle reps in practice a couple weeks ago, according to sources. Moving Shell back to his natural position (where he has 32 career starts) and flipping Edoga to Sam Darnold’s blind-side appears to be the best option for Adam Gase given the circumstances. It’s not ideal facing Bill Belichick with a rookie making his first career start at left tackle, but Gase doesn’t have a lot of choices at the moment.
Center Ryan Kalil is dealing with a sore shoulder. The team has confidence that Jonotthan Harrison, who was the presumptive starter this offseason before Kalil came out of retirement, would fill in without missing a beat. Left guard Alex Lewis tweaked his neck this week, but the injury isn’t believed to be serious. (Harrison would fill in at that spot too).
