Pay no attention to the man in front of the curtain. “I JUST GOT IMPEACHED FOR A PERFECT PHONE CALL,” tweeted President Trump, as the U.S. Senate was sworn in Thursday to judge actions that the House of Representatives deemed impeachable.
As the House managers convincingly make their case in their trial memorandum published Saturday that this president has abused his power, obstructed Congress from legitimate oversight and warrants removal from office, the president insists on the “perfection” of a detailed account of a July 26 phone call between him and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
It is a ridiculous claim echoed throughout his own lawyers’ brief sent to the Senate on Monday that denies all and impugns his accusers. It is perfect — as a snapshot of a multi-faceted plot, involving Rudy Giuliani, Cabinet members and other key administration officials, unfolding over months, with one central goal: extorting Ukraine into announcing investigations politically advantageous to Trump’s re-election.
The phone call takes a turn when Trump asks Zelensky for a “favor” — help corroborating a conspiracy theory that Ukraine, not Russia, hacked the 2016 presidential campaign, and a public probe of Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
The offenses are clear. Now let’s recall what else Republicans claiming nothing to see here would be forced to forget.
