A hiker who got lost in a snowstorm on the treacherous Pacific Crest Trail was rescued by two Oregon deputies on Friday.
Robert Campbell was spotted by Mark Knospe and Mark Ferran of the Marion County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue squad one day after the huge storm had buried the trail he was navigating.
“I really think I owe them my life because ... I couldn’t have made it another night,” he told The Associated Press from a motel in Detroit, Oregon on Friday night. “My sleeping bag and tent are just completely soaked and probably ruined and I have no dry clothes.”
The Pennsylvania native started hiking the famed trail on the U.S.-Mexican border in early May, with hopes to make it all the way to the Canadian border 2,650 miles away. Many have died making the same attempt, including a German man who was killed by a falling tree this year.
The trouble for Campbell started on Wednesday night when the snow started falling. When the trail became covered, a smartphone app that was supposed to show the way also failed.
