It’s not just the defense. Sunday’s 28-14 home opening loss to the Buffalo Bills was a stark reminder of that for the Giants.

James Bettcher’s defense settled down after a shaky start to force four consecutive Bills punts from late in the second-quarter through the end of a scoreless Buffalo third, keeping the Giants within two scores.

But Eli Manning’s offense capitalized with only seven points off that successful stretch, and not until the early fourth quarter. Their failure included a missed 48-yard Aldrick Rosas field goal leading into the strong defensive stretch and a 60-yard TJ Jones punt return that Manning wasted with a late first-half interception.

The Giants, who have drafted second and sixth overall in the last two years, were the clearly inferior team to the Bills (2-0), who have drafted seventh and ninth. The Giants fell to 0-2 for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

Buffalo second-year quarterback Josh Allen converted impressive run and pass plays with his legs, proving he has much more than “a chance to be a starter,” as Pat Shurmur had explained the Giants’ lukewarm evaluation of Allen going into the 2018 NFL Draft.
