Brace for more pain at the pump — gas prices have shot up to more than $4 a gallon in California and prices in New York are expected to also soar, experts told The Post Wednesday.
The price of gas in California is currently the highest in the nation thanks to issues at their oil refineries and strict environmental laws. While New York is insulated from those problems, prices will climb more than usual throughout the summer as the cost of crude oil rises with the start of the summer driving season, according to AAA’s northeast media relations manager Robert Sinclair.
The cost of crude oil on Wednesday opened at $66.17 a gallon, up from $63.76 a gallon last week, according to Markets Insider, which tracks oil prices.
Last week the average cost of a gallon of gas in the Big Apple was $2.839 and on Wednesday, it was $2.903 per gallon, up 6.4 cents, according to Gas Buddy.
Prices are also up 0.8 cents from last year’s average of 2.895 per gallon, making New York the 13th most expensive state for gas in the country, data from the fuel-tracking website shows.
