The pilot of the helicopter that crashed Sunday in southern California, killing basketball superstar Kobe Bryant and eight others, has been identified by friends as Ara Zobayan, a “loving" and "incredible” man.

“Ara was an incredible pilot, instructor pilot, charter pilot and truly a great man,” friend and fellow pilot Jared Yochim wrote Monday on Facebook. “He was not your typical egotistical helicopter pilot like most of us honestly are. Ara was a man that always remained cool, calm and collected.”

Authorities have not confirmed the names of anyone involved, but tributes to Zobayan, Bryant and the seven other victims began to emerge on social media shortly after the tragedy.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The 41-year-old NBA legend, whose remarkable career with Los Angeles Lakers ended in 2016, was traveling to a basketball game in which his daughter was set to play in. The girl, 13-year-old Gianna “Gigi” Onore, was also killed.

Zobayan received his commercial pilot certificate in December 2007, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s online pilot database.
