The suspect, identified by a local outlet as Jatwan Phillips, 16, is charged with aggravated manslaughter for the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Joshua Ancrum, a rising football star.

The childhood friends were in the midst of an argument when Phillips shot Ancrum on Tuesday, according to police.

Ancrum’s mother, Lisa Alvarez, said the argument was about a video game. Additional details about the incident have not been released.

Phillips, charged with aggravated manslaughter, reportedly appeared in court Wednesday, though it is unknown whether he is charged as an adult or minor, entered a plea or had legal representation.

“The shooting is an isolated incident,” Miami Gardens police detective Carolyn Frazer told the Miami Herald. Regardless, she encouraged people to safely store their guns and “teach children about the importance of gun safety.”
