One of the elegant pale-pink birds at the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, Ill., died after a juvenile visitor skipped a rock Monday that clipped the bird’s leg, the zoo said.

“Unfortunately, staff determined the best course of action given the animal’s injuries was to euthanize the bird,” said Jay Tetzloff, the zoo’s director, in an emailed statement. “This was a truly unfortunate accident, and we are working with the juvenile’s family to move forward.”

The zoo, located in the middle of the state, about 140 miles southwest of Chicago and 50 miles from the state’s flagship university, opened its new flamingo exhibit three years ago.

A news release in 2016 announcing the introduction of the habitat near the entrance of the zoo, said the new enclosure would make "the colorful Flamingos the unofficial greeters for the Zoo.”

The zoo’s flamingo collection, which numbers more than 20, represents one of the largest at any zoo in the nation, Tetzloff said, according to Bloomington newspaper The Pantagraph.
