A North Carolina man who was beaten and threatened after family members said they found him half-naked in a room with toddlers is no longer charged with any felonies as prosecutors believe the whole incident may have been a drunken misunderstanding.

Mark Stanley, 61, was visiting family members in Virginia in December 2019 when he was caught naked from the waist down in a bedroom where a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old were sleeping, police said at the time. The children’s father was so furious that he punched him multiple times and threatened him with a firearm, according to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.

But prosecutors recently dropped the felony charges against Stanley because the case was not what the family had initially described, authorities told news outlets.

A DNA analysis found no evidence that the kids were assaulted and their dad later admitted he didn’t see the suspect molesting the toddlers, local newspaper The Free Lance-Star reported. The father also told investigators he may have overacted when Stanley pushed him out of the bedroom and shut the door and that the suspect was so intoxicated that he might have thought he was in a bathroom instead of the children’s room, according to the paper.

Stanley was originally charged with two counts of indecent liberties and one count of domestic assault. Both felonies were dropped and the suspect agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure. He received a suspended sentence, which was covered by the two months he spent behind bars before posting bond last year.
