In the face of a last minute barrage from critics, the city’s Public Design Commission today considers whether to green-light the design of a new Central Park statue honoring women’s suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and, lately added, Sojourner Truth.

Central Park currently has 23 historical statues. All depict men, including people like Fitz-Greene Halleck, a poet you’ve never heard of, for good reason. The proposed statue, slated for the park’s Literary Walk, would be the first to depict real women.

Stanton, Anthony and Truth, New Yorkers all, were giants of the women’s rights movement. Construction has to begin soon so the monument, built mostly with private money and designed by a renowned (female) sculptor, can be unveiled on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s ratification next August.

Each complaint is sillier than the next. One: The monument, an allegorical depiction showing the three women having a lively discussion, depicts a fictitious meeting. Another: It paints too rosy a portrait of Stanton and Anthony, 19th century human women who said racist things. Another: Showing the three together glosses over very real historical fault lines between black and white women’s rights advocates.

For God’s sake, the presidents depicted on Mount Rushmore never posed together. Nobody is saying these people are perfect. Nor does anyone claim they agreed on everything. Inscribe some context on the statue’s pedestal, but let the statue be built.
