Lee Dingle, the North Carolina dad who died in a “freak accident” while playing with his children at the beach last week, will donate his organs and tissue to 55 people, his parents said.
The father of six, 37, was struck by a wave and slammed into the sand Thursday on Oak Island. The force broke his neck which restricted oxygen to his brain. Dingle was transported to a nearby hospital but died the next day.
Tom Caldwell, one of Dingle’s co-workers at a Raleigh engineering firm, told CNN, “He was always thinking of other people. His sort doesn’t come along very often and we’re going to miss him terribly. A fine, fine, fine man.”
"It’s just like him. God bless him, I don’t doubt that at all — it’s just right in line with his life. He was always thinking of others,” said Caldwell. “He was just 37 years old. I don’t understand it.”
There are more than 113,000 people in the United States on waiting lists for organ transplant, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing.
