Salman Mohamed, 22, died by suicide Tuesday evening after shooting Officer Brian Sherman in the arm, according to the MNPD. Officials said Sherman responded to calls about a woman shot at the address, but found no one but Mohamed.

“(Spokesman Don Aaron’s) rhetoric calling it an ‘ambush’ or ‘setup’ is sensational, irresponsible, and reckless,” the family’s lawyer told the station Wednesday.

“Our son Salman has been suffering and struggling with mental health issues,” his family said. “We, as family, have been searching for answers. He was an overachieving, gifted student when he was feeling well. We are devastated by the loss of our son and our lives are forever changed.”
