Facebook announced Friday it had suspended tens of thousands of apps on the social network as part of its ongoing investigation into the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Cambridge Analytica, a UK firm, used a personality test app to steal users’ data without their permission. The data was then used for political advertising.

Facebook was fined $5 billion by the Federal Trade Commission in July for violating their users’ privacy.

Around 400 developers were responsible for the apps, Facebook said. The company cautioned that not all of the apps were privacy threats.

“Our review helps us to better understand patterns of abuse in order to root out bad actors among developers,” the company’s vice-president for product partnerships, Ime Archibong, said in a statement on Friday.
