Walmart is gutting its Cielo Vista store in El Paso, Texas, trashing all the merchandise and will erect a memorial to the 22 people killed in the Aug. 3 shooting there when it reopens in three or four months.
“We’re really taking it down and refurbishing, redoing the entire inside of the store,” Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove told the New York Daily News Thursday. “Essentially all that will remain is the building shell.”
“We want to establish a memorial that honors the victims and recognizes the binational relationship between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez and celebrates the strength of the El Paso community,” Hargrove told The News. “We’re going to proceed thoughtfully and with great regard to our associates and victims in the community as we rebuild the store and plan for that permanent memorial.”
The store’s 400 or so employees want to return to work there, Hargrove said, noting the 93% of them are working at other Walmart stores.
“While they continue to process what has happened, they have repeatedly told us they want to go back to work there at that location,” he said. “They really have not wavered in their collective opinion that to reopen the store is important to their personal healing.”
