El Paso, Texas is holding a Latinx music festival as a move towards healing after the Aug. 3 mass shooting there that killed 22 and injured dozens more.
The fest, El Paso Firme — or “the firm step” in English — will be held on Sept. 7, according to the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR), which is hosting it.
“We want people who reject white supremacy and the killing of innocent people to join us in stamping out this madness,” said BNHR’s Fernando Garcia. “We are standing up to hate and armed violence.”
The massacre, which occurred at a Walmart and was carried out by a lone 21-year-old gunman who was arrested shortly after the shooting, targeted Hispanics, authorities have said.
“It shattered a peace-loving community of families who work hard and in harmony with those here and on the other side of the border,” Garcia said, noting the festival is “an alternative to the hate spewed by a president, who every day solidifies his support among these same white supremacists.”
