LINDEN, N.J. (AP) - A hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian in northern New Jersey is now headed to state prison.

The 52-year-old Woodbridge man had pleaded guilty last month to leaving the scene of a fatal accident and witness tampering charges stemming from the August 2017 crash in Linden that killed 62-year-old Donna Babbs.

Union County prosecutors say the Union Township woman was wheeling a piece of luggage across Route 27 when Nicholson ran a red light. Nicholson stopped and walked over to Babbs, but he then removed her luggage from underneath his car’s bumper and drove off.

Nicholson later abandoned his car in Newark and tried to convince an acquaintance to help him by withholding evidence from police.
