Alejandro Mayorkas, President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Homeland Security Department, faced scrutiny in his last position with the agency over issuing EB-5 visas.
In his capacity as head of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, according to an Obama-era 2015 Inspector General report, Mayorkas intervened to help expedite visa requests for wealthy foreign investors.
The report found that in three separate cases involving the EB-5 visa program, which allows foreign nationals to invest at least $900,000 in United States development projects in order to receive green cards, Mayorkas acted in a manner that concerned employees. The report said staffers worried that he was providing special treatment to investors aligned with Democrats.
The report explained that Mayorkas intervened on behalf of investors tied to former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and Anthony Rodham, Hillary Clinton’s brother.
When pressed on the matter during a 2015 House Homeland Security Committee hearing, he acknowledged that his actions created an impression that he was favoring Democrats, but denied any serious wrongdoing.
