As the leaders of public charter school networks, we agree with the current Democratic presidential candidates that every student should have access to a great education. Sadly, however, some of their proposals to cut funding to public charter schools will harm millions of disadvantaged American children.

Our school systems were founded by teachers and serve more than 134,000 students — almost all of them black and Hispanic students from low-income backgrounds. Today, we call on all Democratic candidates to listen to their constituents.

A recent poll by Democrats for Education Reform found that 81% of Democratic primary voters — and 89% of black Democratic primary voters — support expanding public school options, including public charter schools.

Why? Because in too many parts of this country, quality alternatives are unacceptably slim. Because there are far too many neighborhoods that have, for decades, been failed by our society and public policy.

Charter schools are independently operated public schools which educate 3.2 million, approximately 6%, of students in public schools nationwide. More than 85% of charter schools are run by non-profits — like our three organizations. The majority of the more than 7,000 public charters are located in urban areas, though there are some suburban and rural charter schools as well.
